TRADUCTION EN COURS, MERCI DE VOTRE PATIENCE...
The boreal forest is where I did my Master, studying the impact of modern forestry on spruce grouse. It was just North of the 50th parallele, on the Cree lands of the James Bay Territory. Winters were colder that what I had experienced in Antarctica (regardless of the wind factor), whereas billions of bugs could make springs and summers a hell on Earth. Definitely, this boreal forest is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, seemingly endless, covered with life holding on tight to survive the harsh environment. Unfortunately, private timber companies supported by the government have been devastating this slow-growing forest for decades, causing dramatic habitat loss and fragmentation up to where arctic tundra takes over. The immense carpet of trees is becoming a continuous patchwork of clear-cuts separated by narrow strips of fallen trees. |
